Preparatory Events on Sustainable Development and Piracy at Sea (Brussels, 23-25 June 2010)

The ASEM 8 Preparatory Events on Sustainable Development and Piracy at Sea took place in Brussels from 23 to 25 June. They are an integral part of the preparations for the ASEM 8 Summit.

They were attended by government negotiators from Asia and Europe and from the three prospective new ASEM partners: Russia, Australia and New Zealand. The discussions were conducted on the basis of working texts provided by the Belgian Summit Host. These were good and in-depth discussions, running over the proposals paragraph by paragraph, providing to the Belgian Summit Hosts clear orientations on how to proceed further. The results have now been integrated into new text proposals. These are being presented to the ASEM Senior Officials at their meeting of 13-15 July in Brussels for further review.
